Algorithmic Pulsar Timing

چکیده

Abstract Pulsar timing is a process of iteratively fitting pulse arrival times to constrain the spindown, astrometric, and possibly binary parameters pulsar, by enforcing integer numbers pulsar rotations between times. Phase connection unambiguously determining those rotation while solution. currently requires manual step-by-step phase performed individuals. In an effort quantify streamline this process, we created Algorithmic Timer (APT), algorithm that can accurately connect time isolate pulsars. Using statistical F-test knowledge parameter uncertainties covariances, decides what new data include in fit, when add additional parameters, which model attempt subsequent iterations. these tools, phase-connect previously required substantial effort. We tested on 100 simulated systems, with 99% success rate. APT combines tests techniques logical decision-making very similar one used astronomers for decades, some computational brute force, automate often tricky isolated connection, setting foundation automated systems.

Pulsar Timing

The motivation for radio pulsar timing and its basic principles are reviewed. Present and future radio timing techniques and hardware are summarised and compared. The array of present timing programmes and their scientific goals are collated and described. Recent results and future prospects are discussed, with emphasis on multi-wavelength techniques where appropriate. Timing of radio pulsars a...

Pulsar Timing and Spacetime Curvature

We analyze the effect of weak field gravitational waves on the timing of pulsars, with particular attention to gauge invariance, that is, to the effects that are independent of the choice of coordinates. We find: (i) the Doppler shift cannot be separated into gauge invariant gravitational wave and kinetic contributions; (ii) a gauge invariant separation can be made for the time derivative of th...

Phase Transition Signal in Pulsar Timing

A phase transition in the nature of matter in the core of a neutron star, such as quark deconfinement or Bose condensation, can cause the spontaneous spin-up of a solitary millisecond pulsar. The spin-up epoch for our model lasts for 2 × 10 years or 1/50 of the spin-down time (Glendenning, Pei and Weber in Ref. [1]). The possibility exists also for future measurements on X-ray neutron stars wit...

Testing General Relativity with Pulsar Timing

Pulsars of very different types, including isolated objects and binaries (with short- and long-period orbits, and white-dwarf and neutron-star companions) provide the means to test both the predictions of general relativity and the viability of alternate theories of gravity. This article presents an overview of pulsars, then discusses the current status of and future prospects for tests of equi...

Pulsar searches and timing with the SKA

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a planned multi purpose radio telescope with a collecting area approaching 1 million square metres. One of the key science objectives of the SKA is to provide exquisite strongfield tests of gravitational physics by finding and timing pulsars in extreme binary systems such as a pulsar-black hole binary. To find out how three preliminary SKA configurations will...
